Living with Brain TumorsVerified by : Dr. Ravikiran Vutha, Consultant Neurosurgery, Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai

Brain Tumors can be benign or malignant. They can affect people of any age and are often diagnosed after a seizure, headache, or other symptoms.

Undergoing brain tumor surgery as well as being a brain tumour survivor can be challenging, but there are many strategies to manage symptoms and improve your quality of life. These include:

  • Medications for pain, seizures, and other symptoms.
  • Regular follow-up with your treating doctors and completing radiation and chemotherapy sessions as prescribed.
  • Lifestyle modifications like eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise under the expertise of a physiotherapist.
  • Practicing stress-reducing techniques like meditation and yoga.

The 22nd of July 2023 will be observed as World Brain Day to help raise awareness about brain health and bring in a sense of equality amongst people for individuals with brain related disabilities. It has been observed that individuals with brain tumors have to fight their way through social stigmas and lack of acceptance in the community. As individuals, we should help brain tumor survivors receive appropriate physical, mental and community-based rehabilitation.

Based on the level of functional independence and expected goals, rehab specialists design a customised management protocol. A clinical psychologist helps train the individual to see the brighter side of life after suffering from a brain tumor to cope with social unacceptance. Group therapies with individuals of similar diagnosis proves fruitful by helping build the confidence needed to face the community.
